City As Symbol

City as Symbol

Quarter 3 Midterm Paper
Due Thursday, February 19

Millions of people visit Washington, DC every year. Some come on business. Others to lobby, protest, or meet with representatives. For many Americans, DC is an attractive tourist destination because of its importance as the nation’s capital. When they get here, they are met with a “city of magnificent intentions.”

For your midterm paper, write a 5-7 page essay in which you explore the theme of “magnificent intentions” in relation to the founding of DC and the image it projects to the world today.

To do this, you must draw on course readings, lectures, and discussions as well as independent research about one popular site in DC today. You should base about half your paper on class materials and half your paper on outside research. Click here for site observation and research guidelines.

Your paper must have a thesis and all sources must be cited using footnotes. You must also include a works cited page. Click here for thesis help. Click here for footnote help.

You should turn in a hard copy of your paper to the teacher AND create a link below and post your essay on the website. Include a picture (either one you took or one you find on the internet) of your site on the page you create.

THE PAGE YOU CREATE SHOULD BE NAMED THE TITLE OF YOUR PAPER. IF YOU USE YOUR OWN NAME, IT WILL LINK BACK TO YOUR POEM PAGE.

To attach pictures, click on the little blue/green symbol up near where you can change the font, etc. when you are on the page edit screen. One of them is the "insert image wizard" and it will tell you what to do.
